Last December, the UAC (United Aircraft Corporation) signed a contract for the modernization of the Mig-31 to BM standard. The ability to carry the latest air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, a brand new multi-mode radar, digital data links and upgraded avionics, and new full color multi-function liquid crystal displays are just some of the new additions for the Mig-31 BM.
The Mig-31 is an interceptor designed to protect Russia’s airspace. With the ability to reach speeds of Mach 3.1, the Mig-31 is currently the fastest aircraft in military service (since the SR-71 Blackbird is retired). The Mig-31 can detect up to 10 targets at ranges exceeding 315 km and can intercept ballistic and cruise missiles. The Mig-31 also holds the height record for military aircraft at 123,524 ft.
