The legendary BM-21 Grad will soon get a replacement. Despite the presence of the BM-30 Smerch, one of the best missile artillery systems in the world, for nearly 4 decades, the BM-21 Grad has continued to be used by the Russian military. The reason was that despite the fact that the BM-30 was such an incredible MRLS, it was very heavy and impossible to airdrop. Now, the Russian military will get a vehicle with the punch of the BM-30 in a much smaller package. The CV 9A52-4 Tornado MRLS is installed on a lighter Kamaz chassis and carries twice the number of missiles that the Smerch carries, but it is also faster to reload and can be airdropped.
The Tornado has a range of 90 km and can fire every type of missile that the Smerch can. The chassis is based on the Kamaz-6350, and the system can be put into combat mode in under 3 minutes. The Tornado has 3 firing options: single shot, multi-shot, or the entire salvo. The system can be reloaded in around 8 minutes and can operate in temperatures ranging from -40 to 50 degrees Celsius. The vehicle is equipped with full NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection and has a speed of 90 km/hr.
